Last year, the Golden Globe Awards were untelevised. This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association chose comedian Jerrod Carmichael to emcee the proceedings. Carmichael started the ceremony by saying, “I’m here because I’m black.” Following a brief moment of silence to discomfort the audience, he continued, “This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won’t say were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So do with that information what you will.” In telling all this, Carmichael got one thing right: The HFPA did secure his role to have a black face present, but that was not the primary reason.
