Teachers hope their ideas will be remembered. But other people’s lives do not belong to us.Scott explains that children, teams, companies, and audiences are not projects designed to validate our choices. We can teach, model, correct, love, provide, set boundaries, and create conditions for growth. But we cannot become another person’s character. We cannot make their decisions. We cannot require their future to prove that we lived well.This episode draws from Socrates’ concern for his sons in Plato’s Apology and Xenophon’s account of Socrates questioning Lamprocles about anger toward his mother. The deeper lesson is not compliance, but judgment. Mature leadership is not about producing copies of ourselves.
