EP 377: Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

When we become triggered and our stress rises, it’s natural to think of the specific stressor that caused this to happen. Maybe it’s a traffic jam when you’re on the way to an important meeting. But the thing is that the traffic jam alone, and the resulting stress you feel in your body, did not happen in a vacuum. In reality, several other, seemingly minor experiences have primed your body and mind for that stress response. It’s the email from a colleague; it’s the argument with our kid or spouse; it’s the coffee that got cold before we could drink it. All of these experiences kinda inch us closer to the stress response that hijacks our day. But we can go back even further. Every moment of your life - especially the absolutely mundane and banal moments that we don’t recognize - offers an opportunity to be present. And when we practice this presence, we maintain our balance and grounding and the domino effect of minor stressors leading to major stressors doesn’t have a chance to happen.
