Ep. 38 - Jenny Randle; Depression, Marriage, & Creativity

from Sucker Punched

Jenny and her husband Matt have both struggled with depression at different times. As a college student, Jenny was depressed, but didn't exhibit the typical symptoms, so it took a survey at a college mental health fair to realize something wasn't right. Years later, Jenny and Matt were married, had two babies, and moved cross country for a job. The stress of change, plus some undiagnosed health issues, added a tremendous amount of tension to their marriage. Lifestyle changes, counseling, medication, and better self care continue to help them avoid going to the dark place again. Join Jenny and me at the Brave Together Virtual Retreat from your couch on Saturday 9/9. The disease sneaks up on you and your loved one, and it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut when you get the diagnosis from a doctor. So many things race through your mind: why us? What do we do? We worked so hard to get to this point in life. We just moved here after we both worked for 30 years, sold our house up North, and retired to Florida to enjoy our “golden years”. It’s not fair! Who’s going to take care of her/him? I don’t know a thing about this illness. She’s always done the cooking; I don’t even know how to boil water. He's always taken care of me and everything else, like Finances. I don’t even drive! And it goes on and on. Facing this disease will bring you to your knees. Once you get over the initial shock (GUT PUNCHED), the questions and fears take hold. Where do we turn for help? Who do I call? What do I do? How do you take care of someone with Alzheimer's? Are there support gr Unfinished People Brandon Zieske & Chad Ellenburg Welcome to the Unfinished People podcast. I'm Chad Ellenburg and my co-host is Brandon Zieske. We are both pastors who love and follow Jesus. And we are both very aware of how unfinished we are. Each week, we will talk about the struggle and the beauty of living and breathing in these unfinished vessels. The apostle Paul describes this as carrying around the Treasure of Jesus in mere "jars of clay." Don't we know it.At the coronation of Jesus on the cross, when he punched death in the mouth, he said "it is finished." So why doesn't it feel like it? If you connect with that sentiment, come have a listen. Thanks.
