EP:40 Let's Get Writing with Todd Boland

Todd Boland is the research horticulturist at the Memorial University Botanical Garden. As a result of his love of gardening, he is the author of several books, including Wildflowers of Nova Scotia, Wildflowers of New Brunswick, Wildflowers and Ferns of Newfoundland, Trees and Shrubs of the Maritimes, Trees and Shrubs of Newfoundland and Labrador, Favourite Perennials for Atlantic Canada, and now Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada. Written specifically for Atlantic Canada, this guide gives you the tools and information you need to select, place, and care for the shrubs and climbers best suited to your garden. Shrubs and vines make up the skeleton of a garden, providing structure, defining spaces, and contributing to privacy or windbreaks. Some are chosen for flamboyant floral displays, others for colourful leaves. But they can be tricky to grow and maintain in this region’s climate and soil conditions. With over 40 years of gardening experience in Atlantic Canada, author Todd Boland has deep expertise in overcoming geographic challenges to build spectacular gardens. In Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada, he shares this knowledge, along with hundreds of his own full-colour photographs to inspire and inform. This comprehensive guide includes at-a-glance lists of the best plants for acidic soils, seaside gardens, shady areas, etc., how to avoid common pests and pitfalls, and detailed insight into the best available cultivars for your zone. Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada will not be the only book by Todd Boland this year. Local gardeners are eagerly anticipating A Newfoundland Garden, a guide on navigating the specific challenges of Newfoundland’s weather and unique geology.
