Ep 40: They’re Not Just Kids—They’re People with Boundaries

from Daughters of Diaspora

*********TRIGGER WARNING: topics such as sexual assault, harassment and bullying are discussed in this episode. BACK TO SCHOOL IS HERE!! As some of us buckle up for another school year, we start our conversation reflecting on the change in routine upon us and the blues that come with summer holidays ending. We then dive into child safety and the concern we have with school systems failing to be safe spaces for children, with the rise of bullying, harassment and assaults. We stress the importance of teaching kids how to say no and educating them about their boundaries. As always, we share cultural perspectives and our thoughts on calling kids husbands and wives, shaking hands with non mahrams and victim blaming. Our conversation finishes off with us questioning what grooming is and whether we as Muslims have gone too far in adopting Western ideologies when it comes to marriage and consent.
