EP 433: Negative Mental States

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

Our emotions are our body’s built-in motivation system. Everything we do, we have our emotions to thank for the energy and drive to do. And as you probably know, emotions have a ton of strength and power! This strength and power is the main reason that we NEVER want to try to ‘Stop’ our emotions or stuff them inside or avoid them in any way. Doing so invites some very serious health concerns. But at the same time, negative emotions cause our bodies to suffer in the stress response and lead to negative consequences as a result of our reactivity. So what can we do? Well, the answer is quite simple: Instead of addressing the negative emotion, which is a result, we can address the mental state that caused the emotion. This is the same concept as addressing the disease over the symptoms of the disease. In today’s episode, I walk you through the three negative mental states that will always result in negative emotions and lead to the stress response in our bodies. Tomorrow, we’re going to talk about how these negative mental states, left unchecked, will evolve into our personality. I’ll also give you a little quiz to help you determine which of these personalities is dominant for you.
