Ep. 45 - Embracing the Vulnerable Spaces in Autism
from Autism for Badass Moms · host Rashidah Cartwright
In this episode, we sit down with Ivory, a dedicated autism mom residing in Kansas City, Missouri. As an educator and assistant principal who taught neurodiverse young people and trained teachers on equity, inclusiveness, and anti-racism, Ivory had always rooted herself in amplifying the voices of the most marginalized, as her upbringing had its share of hardships. However, it wasn't until she learned that her son was diagnosed with autism, that she was tasked with "practicing what she preached." Her humble upbringing has instilled in her a deep sense of compassion and empathy for marginalized communities, especially those affected by racism and inequality in education. As a mother of a child with autism, Ivory’s purpose in advocating for those who are most vulnerable has deepened. Her personal experiences have shaped her advocacy and her desire to influence a society where everyone can thrive while being their authentic selves. Ivory discusses overcoming challenges, the journey to diagnosis, redefining strength and vulnerability, and the importance of self-care for mothers.
