ep. 48 - Kari Gunter-Seymour

Episode #48 features Kari Gunter-Seymour and her new book, A Place So Deep Inside America It Can't Be Seen. Kari appeared in Poets Respond in 2014, and has been up to a whole lot since, just recently being named Ohio Poet of the Year and Poet Laureate of Ohio. A ninth generation Appalachian, Kari Gunter-Seymour’s work is firmly and unapologetically attached to her home soil and is an examination of the long-lasting effects of stereotype and false narratives surrounding native Appalachians. Her poems appear in numerous journals and publications and on her website: www.karigunterseymourpoet.com. Her current collection is titled A Place So Deep Inside America It Can’t Be Seen (Sheila-Na-Gig Editions 2020). Gunter-Seymour is the founder/executive director of the Women of Appalachia Project™ (WOAP™), an arts organization she created to address discrimination directed at women from the Appalachian region by providing opportunities to come together in performances, exhibitions and publications, to embrace the stereotype, show the whole woman, beyond the superficial factors people use to judge her. She is the editor of the (WOAP™) anthology series, Women Speak, volumes 1-5 and Essentially Athens Ohio, a collection of fine art, tales and experiences from those living in or with strong ties to Athens County, Ohio. She holds a B.F.A. in graphic design and an M.A. in commercial photography. She is a retired instructor in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, the Ohio Poet of the Year 2020 and Poet Laureate of Ohio. A poem she wrote in support of families living in poverty in Athens County, OH, went viral and has been seen by over 100,000 people, resulting in thousands of dollars donated to her local food pantry.
