Ep. 5 | No Is A Complete Sentence
from Tea Talk with Coach Carolyn Hosted by Carolyn Ramona Hantz
No is a complete sentence. But it's not without consequences. In 1998, newly back from maternity leave, I was head of a technical evaluation panel for an IT audit contract. My supervisor wanted the bid information before the award went to a former staff member she favored. There was no legal basis for a sole-source award, so we ran a competitive process instead. When she asked for the bids, I said no. When she escalated it to the Director and Deputy Director, I said no again, and I brought an alternative with me. In this episode I talk about: The difference between being difficult and being principled Why I said no twice, at increasing levels of pressure, and what I did instead The real test that came after the contract was awarded Why leadership requires knowing when not to agree What to know before you say no: the risk, the rule, the consequences, and your solution Tea Talk reflection:Where are you saying yes because saying no feels uncomfortable? What might saying yes cost you? New episodes drop every Tuesday. Follow the show so the next one lands right in your library. Prefer video? Tea Talk with Coach Carolyn is also on YouTube.
