EP 513: Making Practice Playful
from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns
Anything we can possibly learn, we learn in two distinct and specific ways that actually use completely different circuits of the brain. First, we learn through knowledge. This would be the guitar teacher showing you how to make a basic chord. But that knowledge doesn’t mean that you can actually play that chord. In order to get to that point, of actually playing the guitar chord, we need to apply the other kind of learning. This learning is only achieved through repetitious experience. You might refer to this repetitious experience with a simple and common word: Practice. But as is true with everything from learning guitar to learning golf, you’re going to learn far more efficaciously when you can practice in a way that is loose, curious, and fun. And in today’s episode, I talk about how to do this with your meditation and mindfulness practices: Of course, this is counterintuitive for most people. Through deep and long standing habits we picked up from result-minded teachers and coaches of our childhood, most of us have a sense that learning and practicing need to be serious and hard in order to be effective. And that’s where having a coach to help you along can be vital to your success in developing mindfulness in your life. For that reason, I offer a no-cost (that means free!) coaching session so you can see how helpful it can be.
