From the glow of St. Paul's No. 1, welcome to another edition of Cabin Country. Give us the time and we'll take you out of the traffic and away from the levee.
Let's find the place where the looms call out among the moonlit waves. We're the wind, size among the Norway pines. Pull up a dock chair, have a sip of your coffee, get a line in the water. This is Cabin Country.
Now here's Bjorn Lloydstead, and I'm Fudd Klugman with another woodland escape. I'd like to welcome to Cabin Country. I am Bjorn Lloydstead. And I'm Fudd Klugman.
And we've got plenty to talk about Fudd. We do. We just made our annual springtime early summer trip up to the Gull River. It was quite nice.
Beautiful. And kind of hot at one point. Yeah. I tested out the new AC unit.
That's right. Yep, got a new AC unit and I'm not ashamed of that. Like I keep saying, I like my comforts. Exactly.
Each time I get more comfortable up there. I can't go back. The gate closes behind me. Correct.
While we were up there, we had a new mattress for the main bedroom up there. Gone are the days of you laying down on a bed and disappearing into the center of a soft squishy. Oh yes. Well that's the back.
Of course that's the way it is in Cabin Country. You bring up your second hand. Matrices, lawnmores and things like that. This mattress, you know, again, it was the same old story.
I think it was my dad's wife's brothers or something. Oh well, it's not very old. They said it's a great mattress. I'm standing mattress.
Not only was it kind of soft and squishy, but it kind of reeked. Aromatic. And I don't mean like bad smells, but like perfuming. Yeah.
My dad's wife is just very hypersensitive to smells like she's the kind that uses fragrance-free laundry detergent and dryer sheets. And my dad, you know, he can't smell a thing. No, he can't taste or smell anything. So it makes her interesting car rides up.
I bet it does. My dad doesn't quite realize. And I'm, you know, of course, most fathers and sons, perhaps, would say, Dad, you're stinking up the car. Cut it out.
But I hold my tongue. You know, I just let the old man go. But I think Marilyn says, Oh, I rolled down the window. It's just, and anyway, I got a new man.
I wondered up there because, you know, I for one, I'm a city dweller. And you're an outskirts of the city. And we smell a skunkier aroma. Yeah.
And immediately assume kind of shoes. Somebody around us is. Yeah. That's exactly.
Arriving and enjoying one of the fowl or smelling offerings. We got up there. Yeah. And I could think, like, some actress delivery took place.
And I was like, Oh, man. I think I've got delivery guys. I think delivery guys might have been, uh, biby driving and baking here. I'm not sure.
They left and I was like, No, it's still hanging around. I thought, what the heck? And you're like, You know what? I think there's a skunk.
Yeah. And sure enough, each time I've been up this year, when I get down to the shed, it smells. Oh, yes. Yes.
Oh, yeah. I'm always like, all right. Where are they? I'm afraid I always open up the shed thinking, you know, like inside.
I'm like, skunk standing there, shattering at you. Oh, no sightings of the skunk. The skunk was not to be seen. We certainly smelled it.
Yes. And all weekend long in various strengths. Mm hmm. Yeah.
Yeah. But I think I'm in the rough by the fire, and it was kind of breezy this when we were up there. Right. Well, and if people go to eventually go to the web page, there's, I think a shot or two of you creating our wood pile this weekend.
And what was it? Like four or five sections of the old dock. Yes. A little swayback.
A little cedar board. Unsure of, am I going to stay above water or go into my chin. And we took them off and placed them with the the through flow or the through flow. Yes the plastic Which which is so much nicer not very nice to kneel on in shorts.
No, you discovered that yeah Cuz when we had to we'll get to our fish we caught them on here the fishing tail each time I have to Get some fish slime on me and kneel down to reach down into the water off the dog and rinse my hands off Yeah, that's good. I'm gonna need to shoot up your kneecaps But that said you with the assistance of a reciprocating saw made short work of those five sections and cut them into sizes that could burn and they burned One quite nice. Yes, we did have a brief aroma of a giant number two pencil on fire But a cedar board was a charm in fact not to show our hand early here, but you did in fact gut a good size bass Yes, and we offered up the the skeletal remains in the head and all the newspaper right into those boards and created kind of a Pyre for said some fish guts and a couple hours later. There was nothing to be seen.
Yeah, it was good not But you can funeral for the remains of that that's smully and that's good large mouth large mouth was it a large mouth? I keep saying small mouth but there's a small mouth to be seen but that's okay because again jumping ahead Well, we're just gonna go back and forth here, but we had that walleye tonight. See I'm showing my hand that small mouth I get a large mouth that no I know again, but it's harder I I fried up the the slabs from the large mouth tonight combined with some rockfish that we had ordered in like a Delivery fish kind of thing in the event and the rockfish was more fishy tasting than the large mouth bass But I kept saying over and over here make sure you get some of this walleye. I thought was a bass Oh, yeah, yeah bass and I kept doing it over and over again after you had Filated out you soaked it a good long time and yeah freshwater right and that must do something right I think so helps kind of make it more table worthy indeed Yeah, hardly a rough fish right so and I think the I did freeze it and we ate it It's just a few days after freezing it so I thought those videos will be coming to you'll get to see fud Clubman going after said bass and the ideal well, I'm putting the horse before the cart now Let me try that again the cart before the horse as you cleaned your walleye dang Don't form up.
Yeah large, but the the boning knife was awfully dull Yes, I saw you tried to sharpen it and there was not a lot of good work coming out of that sharpener And so you still had a dull yeah, but flexible. Yeah, I love my Mermaid it I don't know and you went after it with a knife from the knife block Yeah, there's a new knife block up there and it was real yeah kind of almost hacksaw approach to yeah Yeah, I thought I'd come in cleaning fish But it turned out fine and usually when I clean a fish which isn't that often in fact? I intended to throw this bass back But because the both sets of smallish trouble hooks were like just buried in its gills and usually I'll wrap up the The guts and I'll put those in the freezer too and then take them home and get rid of them at home Because trash you'd like to bury them or toss them out up there because it just attracts the skunk will come back right Sometimes I'll walk back a ways and put them back but anyways this time around like you said we had good hot fire going Fire is a bit of biting funeral right yeah for the bass that I asked a large mouth bass I have found on this last trip fun I guess I've always known this but my dad was always such a you're gonna have a leader on everything yeah nine out of ten times We were trolling right and even if he was just putting a bobber on and I'm sinking a minnow down about five feet and tossing it out Just having a seat drinking his coffee smoking his pipe. He had a leader Yeah, he had a leader on that thing and always did so I guess I kind of knew and and it helped with some of the lighter baits We purchased on this trip again right that leader does give you a few more feet on your cast Yeah, as if you just go straight you know not onto the Eyelit there sure in the front of the front of the lure you're not gonna get quite as much distance It's not quite as heavy but speaking of these lures they were new lures.
Yes. We went on a bit of a lure shopping trip We typically do that it's part of our Saturday absolutely early afternoon trip into the Brainerd Baxter area Which is quite busy, but we usually pick up a couple of things and this time we found I was I carried out quite a few more objects And I I walked away with a pair myself, uh-huh, and it was also fresh off my birthday So fun was kind enough to bring up a birthday gift of a daredevil spoon right to the original a meps number four yes, I think it was a four or six four meps. Yeah beautiful bucktail the whole bit and then a Johnson spoon that was weelus. Yeah, so I used that weelus spoon on several casts and then I added a curly rubberized worm Mr.
Twister. Hey, come on. Let's look at this. It's interesting and it did its due diligence.
It avoided all the weeds Mm-hmm, but I think it was a little too big maybe well what was alive and interested off the end of your dock on this trip Yeah, and so yeah, I walked in with three and then we went to our favorite tackle shop I guess in some extent I also bought a fishing license so I could be legal as the one-armed fisherman I just recently had hand surgery and fuck got in on the fun of a you want me to put that lure on your leader Yeah, you're good. I can't quite get it. Oh look thought I caught babies first Sunfish. Could you take this off for me?
I can't get that I got the fishing license good to go It's good for a year we get up there again this summer the fall or the next spring I'm still legal and still legit they give you that fabulous piece of plastic to sign yeah, you're stretchy Right so to DNR fishing license, and then I got my two Additional lures and I wanted top floors and kind of small yeah, I thought that I mean it seems like What's there needs a smaller more active bait? So I found a rebel Grasshopper yeah two of the world's smallest treble hooks sets Yeah, and it claimed to be a top floater I was like great and then a rattle on yeah a minnow and I love the colors on it It was light blue silver on the top white on the sides and like Florida Gator orange on the bottom right hey This thing's gonna attract it's a nice look at nice action on it. Yeah, it's a top floater or so they said and yet it did yeah They all do this and I'm just Complete and total novice but I several casts and brought it back in and wasn't floating on the surface It was about six inches under yeah, I did read the container which I might add I kept intact Oh yeah, so that 30 years from now when we're you know a fart with every step we take while walking then gumming our mush But it's all this now and it's an antique and it's in the original packaging yes thanks for the five bucks Yeah, I don't know but they're both still have the packaging but they both uh Did their job and that I didn't get anything on the rattle which kind of sad makes it look so torpedo like and yeah gorgeous beautiful Yeah, so you know stood out underwater was oh wonderful But then I thought you know I bet this top floating grasshopper will be different and sure enough I caught four Relatively small Not big enough for fun to do more hacksawing but they were all sunfish I'd like one crappie and three Sunnies yeah And then at one point I was reeling back in and you were not on the dock you were up there doing surgery on your bass Uh-huh and I caught a bass right got it up within sight of the dock and then it did the power flip die Oh and spit book okay, and I was like you weasel but at the same time I was like what am I gonna do with one arm Hey, come on down here and take this pass off my five and I'm ready for back in the water But it was it was fun and it yeah five five fish in this course of about half an hour So yeah, I was a I'm a big supporter of the rebel grasshopper if you should and tiny little treble hooks I couldn't believe those things yeah, and the Sunnies seemed to love it I'm like oh look at that thing. I'm hard you know right at one point you were gone up to get something out of the shack And I was like well I'm gonna try so I've got it on the dock and I put my foot on top of it and rip the thing right out of its lip Oh, and it just jumped back into the river and took off with a rip lip and you're gonna be alright It'll heal yeah, and I didn't have to bite a lot of fish got slim on my right hand And then I got to kneel down on the flow through oh yeah But yeah, we had fun.
I mean you you caught that big big large mouth I mean for what we caught that weekend it was pretty good size. I mean it was a good eating size It was and you got to eat it. Yeah, and it was tasty. Yeah fried in a little shore lunch original flavor There you go.
What about the rockfish? What do you do the rockfish the same thing? I just yeah, I just had a box of Shore luncheon had these two packages of these skinny rockfish and they were kind of fishy, but not terrible you know right they had more that Sardine fishing is toe rather than which I enjoy sardines, but With the bass was quite good and yeah when I caught it I also walked away what it was a brand-new rebel like frog popper I'll never some iron need to this too because you'd gone how many casts you suppose you threw out with that new lure With not the frog one or was it no it was a no you see what else it I guess no you caught the bass though Is that recall yeah one of the new ones yeah on the part of this thing doesn't have any it's not making any motion I mean it's real dog yeah, I'm reeling it in and there's no motion There's no right you're trying to get it to go and and nothing and nothing and nothing and you took one last shot at it And came popping back in and and the popping was all through your wrist action right there was no help from the lure sadly Yeah, ideally we don't get a complaint from rebel lures But I wasn't doing anything and then all of a sudden boom and it just hit on that thing So aggressively that it kind of all the troubles into its gills and I generally fish for bass with a you know single hook in a Worm right you know usually a black rubber worm or right dark purple or something and and so it's much easier to get a single hook out Then two sets of smaller treble hooks And so the thought I had was like okay if you're fishing to keep the fish and have them from me I'll use the treble hook lures because chances are you're gonna have a hard time getting those right and you did I Was waiting on it you did I was trying to be as careful as I could the fish would flip around hooks would go into my thumb Oh, right blood was starting to appear and you know all my fish now on you yeah Yeah, so I'm like and it's one of those things where I'm generally not prepared to clean the fish right away Usually you'll stick them in a live box or put them on a stringer, but this was getting late into the evening right we're getting close to Wrapping things up it was bleeding like a stuck hog and it was and we had to decide to well I'm gonna have to clean it. I'm not gonna try to throw this thing back right torn lip is one thing I can survive but when you're into the gills he's not gonna survive that good so here I am It would be it yeah, it's not gonna It's not gonna live so you handed me my little Leatherman pliers on my box and I yanked the hooks out and I'm running up I'm literally I had the fish in my mouth and I'm walking in the cabin in your hand in my hand The newspapers are inside by the fireplace you got to go inside and I didn't want to set the thing down right so I'm walking all over Running around with this fish in my hand.
It was a good old-fashioned fish story fud You have a lot on the dock blood on your hands blood on your pants have blood on that letterman Yes, indeed and then he of course be it whatever ended up On the newspaper becoming a future meal right on I mean you had that bit where you holding down the skin and sliding the blade back and forth You're getting predominantly all the meat Yeah, and then the skin was just staying on the newspaper So even though it was a big serrated blip what I think it was serrated. No, it wasn't serrated. Okay. That really chews up I was gonna say yeah making Norwegian fish balls out of that thing.
Yeah Turned out okay, and I have done much worse on flaying So it turned out to be a really nice sized you two big fillets out of that Yeah, you did you did have a pretty good take so other than that Yeah, we just got like a little crappie and some some keeper sized sunfish But again, I my dad goes up with Maryland and they keep lots of my dad cleans them up and they eat them a lot Sure, so for us, it's a little bit more of the sport just catch it What you were saying throw back you really enjoy the taste of the panfishes. Yeah growing up that was That's why I like fish because the pan fish we have specially crappies. Yep, not fishy at all it was just I don't know it's just like butter soft and delicious and right so when I do like if I did catch a big crappie I might just just for all time sake You tempted to cook it up cook it up in a pan and try to convince you that see they're good Bjorn because Historically, you're not a big fan of you. I'm not you did you did hook me in as it were to to large mouth bass They'd yeah, they taste good last time just a couple years back and you hooked into another no You know what I think I caught it and you're like no, you know what you're eating this one.
Oh, come on fun. Yeah Yeah, I got sliced turkey in there. Yeah, no, no, no, you're gonna be amazed I think you did the cast iron skillet over the fire. Yeah, sure.
Well, no, you didn't be sure lunch because of the gluten thing Oh, yeah, butter. Yeah, and it was right. I'm fine. Yeah, the court my father them them's good eating Yeah, it was delicious So I stand corrected but you ever catch a big slab pound and a half black crappie.
I'll uh, I'll talk in I'll eat it We'll try it out. Yeah shot ideally if you catch one. We'll catch more than one. Yeah when you get that specific crappie rod and yeah It's fun to watch you throw that thing out there and be an action with you even bought some well now.
I'm stealing your story Tell us about what you bought. You got the frog popper the rebel and then didn't you also buy something? It was a little jig a little a black and like chartreuse yellow green kind of bubble-b colored thing and a little spin around it that Little tiny hook. I don't know what number it is the diehards out there.
Well, that's probably a number four or number I've got there though, but yeah, it's what about those that number? It's funny crappies have big miles like bass a large mouth bass, but they typically the bait you use is small hooks for those But sure anyway, yes crappies. I always want to catch more crappies. I figured if I caught this rod It says crappie right on it.
Yeah, then it would lure more crappies to it. You sure think no It's just longer because the jigs you use are lighter and so you want a longer pole to get a cast that gets a sense it out more And sure this is staunched as we get here in cabin country talking about fishing true. This is true. Yeah, usually we're more about Bugs and how to get rid of them or I will say this to birds we heard just sitting there on the dock tossing our Our new lures out into the gull there were again several bald eagle sightings Yep, and at one point this was this was a big one for me.
But you maybe thought yeah, whatever I was like wow look at that So there's a osprey and lots of them yeah there and There was an osprey fishing the river and a bald eagle kind of doing the high circle and the osprey was having none of it and see I'm robbing the eagle and I had my Phone hooked into Merlin through Cornell bird labs. Mm-hmm. I was like come on I wanted so because the eagle was was let and fly with all kinds of vocalizations and the osprey was as well And it said osprey and I said, yeah, I know and then the eagle just climbed up No, it's getting died bomb by this osprey. Yeah, nope I'm out of here and you're not gonna get the opportunity to prove to anybody you saw an eagle because it would get bald eagle I'm a cool boy, but we did see Orioles or heard them.
Yes, we are more Orioles and catbirds. Yeah interestingly enough great horned owls It was a big weekend for for those who like the birds So yeah exciting exciting stuff and then much to my surprise and much to yours as well There was a log used to be kind of sticking out into the driveway Yeah, but your dad with his artistic chainsaws had turned into a black bear Yes, so it was this giant black bear head and then you said at one point you kind of hit it with your van right? Oh, yeah, there's a big dent on the passenger side my hand So the bears give it a headbutt and left the ark on your vehicle and now it's been beheaded Yes, there's this log full of carpenter ankles and then the head of the bear laying in the garage He's been guillotine this is insane I was with my dad up you know several weeks ago when that happened where I was but was because I was took the boat off of the property Right after spending a couple you know an hour cleaning all the mouse poop out of it sure incidentally That's a big mistake. I left it up there covered it with two tarps put plenty of smelly, you know mice were how it's yeah And it did not work out there were acorns and mouse poop and all kinds of things So I did a lot of vacuuming and wiping down and anyways got it into the river But just maneuvering around the trees once again.
I got too close to that nose of that black bear And a big dent in my dad felt bad about that So he didn't even tell me about it until you and I came up and there it is the beheaded Bear and I it's funny that the head was still there. I thought he'd burn it or something Yeah, they just kind of cut it off and set it there right next to it like a some kind of emblem Here it is. Yes, he's done. He's so yeah looking at that log to I couldn't help but think you know Maybe get the electric chainsaw out at some point and start taking it off and small slices and running it through your your electronic Log splitter.
Oh, yeah, we'll burn that sucker at some point. Yes Yeah, that's another new addition if you're ever wondering if a if it's worth to spend two seventy three hundred dollars on a six ton Log splitter get it at least for the Gulf River the trees aren't so mammoth right but that thing You know we're in our we're pushing our late 50s here Be aren't correct. It's the days of chopping wood or just not I don't really enjoy it much anymore anymore It was great a decade ago But so an electric log splitter is the way to go and that sure was handy worked like crazy in fact at one point You split a big hunk of old red pine I think they might have been a little piece of red oak okay, and because it seemed kind of red inside and you cut it open and it was teaming Front taking our litterants egg sacks yeah over right away say little eggs eggs, but those eggs over half an inch long These are big like with those on hooks roll out see what happens. Yeah, but oh my gosh that was That's always something big Robbie and egg I mean that's natural that's part of the decomp is natural decomposition that has since in the woods But this was like part of the wood pile and I thought well let's get rid of this thing It's all naughty too hard to cut with an axe so let's see if the let's see if the electric logs will do and it did but it disturbed a huge colony colony and they were all over the place but that's all right They dispersed and probably found not a log to go into it.
I would think so I would think so yeah There's plenty of wood up there too to cut up and stack burn One could spend an entire summer without leaving the place and not even put a dent into all of them You have a full wood pile and lots of dished home to answer. Hey, what are you doing? Not a lot of river activity as far as boats this go around there a couple of yeah This was a Wednesday to Friday morning trip And it was well after the Memorial Day weekend and well before the July 4th weekend so it was like not much action midweek downtime Yeah, there was the occasional one fishing boat went by and there were a couple different trips up and down the river by a full Regalia of family members on a pontoon on to and then right before we left a big mudmotor yes kind of fishing hunting Craft came up the river and you can always hear them before you see them We also knew that some neighbors across the river had come up Friday or late Thursday night because there's some I don't know what kind of dog it is but you're beagle or a bass and out some kind of hound yeah, it's probably barking at us Yeah, 300 yards away. I see Well At least we have two days a piece in fine boys.
It was good Yeah, I just kind of summed it up for the weekend. It was like well, we're fishing now. We're going on a trip now We're split some wood now fishing again now. We're here on a radio show.
Yep time to start burning this pile of dock boards, right? We did we enjoyed it got clear again and in fact to the point where we even opened the windows the humidity went down Yeah, it's like let's open up the windows and going in the cabin you could hear the crack of the fire and yeah For those planning on heading up the fire threat is low. Yeah a lot of rain Like fire rings a little damp and some of the lawns a little damp so clearly it had been raining and fire fire dangers low So we felt mighty fine about having a yeah good old-fashioned cedar plank fire Didn't have to use the log splitter for that. Nope had a saws all and cutting that those boards up It's amazing that we were supported at all.
They were so brilliant. Yes, so easy to break I could write it so it felt all the more better that we replaced them before anybody had a serious mishap there boards A spring feel of old punkie wood right indeed Maybe it's a good time for that you're a word or two from some of our sponsors and I'll get back to you back to the show That sounds good KCC on television channel 10 the station that talks to the heart of cabin country Join us on channel 10 every Thursday evening at 7 30 for another entertaining half hour of late country's Somalia your weekly host for Our weekly delving and the fabulous flavors and good taste your manta's day L'Arreld Monument as you well know late country's Somalia is KCCN's weekly offerings to our loyal viewers covering the wide world of Commestables both highlighting and recommending the best of cabin country L'Arreld will visit the wineries and breweries of Northland and review their many products They'll open up the horizons to visit local cheese makers dairies farms and meat markets to suggest great new products for your cabins dinner table And money hasn't forgotten about the kids either as late country's Somalia L'Arreld will review the latest flavors that kids find so wonderful from the latest and breakfast cereal is to bubblegums and yes Even toothpaste the late country's Somalia is there for you. This is an annual event Where all are welcome to bring wildish food to share and compete for the best tasting and most unique dish awards This means anything harvested in the wild wild game blueberries wild rice, etc Or from your garden are on the table the corrects meadows is a Wisconsin state wildlife management area northwestern, Wisconsin near Gransford It is comprised of 30,000 acres mostly marsh and prairie open to public use main activities are bird nature watching as well as hunting trapping and gathering wild rice proper permits required Blueberries hazelnuts choke cherries are also forged here The friends of corrects meadows group helps maintain the visitor center and conducts social activities to promote the property of which the game feed is won This event is progressed well beyond the level seen in the early days lots of well cooked but suspicious smelling creations More recently the previous two events have been swept by the same local couple Setting the bar high with roadkill Rubens corn venison flatbread pizza with kraut and thousand island dipping sauce Bear paw pies hand pies made with bear meat and the woods mushrooms and a crust made with bear lard Shefs this year again demonstrated increased effort being put into these dishes Presentation quality and innovative ideas now make it a challenge to even garner a few votes let alone win Some of us now practice our recipes ahead of time including this writer who ruined and consumed three batches of buffalo fizz and spring rolls before getting the rolling and frying techniques correct Some highlights from the 2024 event, but here we go. Uh, number one wild forage pop tarts with wild forage blackberry jam and a lemon glaze Doesn't sound half bad. I mean I guess the lemon glaze was from a possibly grocery store.
I haven't heard too many lemon species Flourishing here in north western, wisconsin, but hey, you know all the same the blackberries the blackberries were forged pop tart sounds delicious venison berry otakos and these rolled off the grill to order with a full array of toppings available and there is a picture here for us as venison berry otakos How to eat open the taco and add your toppings of your choosing including cilantro sweet onion sweet onion very small font here You could use lime if you'd care to sour crease sour crease sour crease. I think that might be uh, oxalia, I'm not mistaken least called sweet and sour Uh dip it in the broth and enjoy berry originates from the state of hollisco in mexico and is traditionally made with goat meat served as a stew Wow, it's a stewed venison the boy sweet and sour sounds delicious hot off the grill made to order moiring all right There was a pot of venison sloppy joe's but that I sure to please you mm-hmm pheasant nuggets Yeah, what do those look like you know I didn't sort of picture here? I don't know there's lots of photos of something that looks like a pot sticker that could be the pheasant nugget there They look like hand-fried possibly. I'm not sure they sound delicious.
I mean I'm intrigued there plump Mop watering next up on the list the wild apple cream cheese bars with homemade maple syrup ice cream Wild rice hot dish featuring chunks quote unquote chunks of big fat south Dakota corn fed mallard and other stuff South Dakota corn fed mallard is considered quote unquote a fine table bird a fine table. Thank you Thank you. Let it that sounds like came straight out of the golden book of game birds All right, we may be featuring him. Yeah coming back to copy someone brought a big pot of bear stew You betcha any thoughts on that foot bear stew sounds filling and hearty hearty.
Yes, hearty and rib sticking plenty for everybody Chicken wild rice soup the rice was gathered at treks with the proper permits permits Yes, indeed maple venison wild stuffed mushroom. Let's try that again mild venison wild rice stuffed mushrooms again rice harvested with the proper permits No, you gotta write the first maple venison maple venison wild rice stuffed on mushrooms. My goodness. My mouth is what yum yum steamed barbecued squirrel buns Assuming that means some type of baked offering filled with stewed steamed barbecue squirrel Yeah, I've never been in fact squirrel buns.
Oh, that's a that's a tiny offering. That's it Yeah, I've never squirrel was standing in a pair of five-ounce hands delicious. I've snack size snacks size I've never had a squirrel. Have you I had not I have not although Mike did say he got through his u of m days You know totem squirrel rifle.
He'd go home to kind of the wilds of the vadnesites area Shoot many a squirrel he brought you know, he was not uncommon to have his his house fridge and house roommates kind of go What the actual dead squirrels in the fridge? Yeah Little crop little barbecue sauce. Oh great. Oh, gosh.
Great. Wow. I'm I'm not against the idea I'd be I'd be willing to give it a shot. You know if those are cornbread squirrel.
Oh, yeah, be delicious Hmm. You never know someone also brought a pot of crappie chowder Cropty chowder not crampy. He has that be white crappie with a black crappie. What are we looking at there?
Oh, when did you last eat a crappie foot? Oh my gosh too long ago? I grew up eating sunfish and crappies Antition in my memory anyways. It was the best fish I ever had in life crappie It was crappie croppie croppie chowder not crappie next up.
We get the spicy southwest venison stew. All right southwest of what? Yes You've said sir and then we have the buffalo fessent spring rolls. I think Gransburg Mike was the the offer that brought those So really got the folding right and the rolling down the deep frying excellent buffalo fessent Oh, that was good And then there was a picture of this last one and I I was absent minded in my printing here But I did not include the photo of the venison shank snack.
Hmm and Mike's comment was it looks really odd. It tastes really good So my guess is kind of a snack a well-brazed venison shank And then I'm guessing you would you pulled me free and look look kind of flat like it was It was rolled out flat into it. You know the venison shank the lamb shanks the beef shanks I mean very popular in a lot of cultures Italian food osso buco where it's a beef shank and Cooked long enough so the beef is literally falling off the shank bone And a small spoon served with the dish referred to as a tax collector which is used for getting the marrow Apparently has quite a flavor of its own right. Well, I'll go ahead and continue reading here.
That was the list They all sounded good. It's good. You can find out what won yes best dish Yeah, anyway might goes on to say most dishes were ready by 5 30 and the estimated 25 attendees began tasting Apple time was given to sample these dishes more than once in some cases and socialize All guests were encouraged to bring their own whistle letters which added to the evening's jocularity Jocularity Jocularity ballots were passed and attendees voted for their favorite dishes in the end here. We go We had two new champions venison berry otakos hot off the grill and steamed barbecue squirrel ones Wow, squirrel must taste good foot.
Well, it must I ever still don't know if I'm Curious enough to want it Perhaps if you breathe into its tiny mouth, you can put it back to life This year's champs dethroned last year's champs although illness prevented last year's champs from even attending. Oh, oh, it's a shit I wonder what they would have brought hmm yield pout It's any problem crispy. I don't know. It was rumored that their recipe was to be something with goose breast pastrami Wow, man.
So we are looking forward to that next year. That could be interesting. Yeah, goose has a very kind of beef like Yeah texture and flavor. So it's a big form the pickling spice let it sit for several weeks Slow roasted.
Hmm could be good. Well, so he says here start thinking about a recipe you could bring next year and join the fun It is usually held in February with less stuff going on at that time of the year It is a welcome break from the midwinter blaz. So a field report from grasberg mike excellent turtles layer himself I am noticing a lack here of anything turtle themed. Yeah, uh with all the meat supposedly having fun Mike had done a bit of trapping this year.
There were a couple of I don't know the pictures made it to the website I don't know but he had trapped a couple of beaver. Oh, and I know our good sadly deceased friend Yule Gibbons would talk about the finer points of cleaning and eating Beef in one of his books which might be sitting on that bookshelf right back here I know we'll be taking a take a little walk with you here at somewhere. We'll be reading from Yule's masterworks I've got four different volumes from you'll get in talking about foraging hunting fishing in some cases even talks about the travails of defatting and soaking Muskrat and then the cooking and eventual eating of a muskrat and it can be done crisp and tasty Well, it can be done and I noticed there too no muskrat on the menu I see a lack there in but yeah, this is the crappie chowder the steamed barbecued squirrel buns Bear stew and I you know, I what do you how do you flavor a bear stew? I my cousin Dan who is hunted everything and everything he's hunted easy and talked about the the kind of bulky heavy kind of greasy taste of bear meat But I suppose you know some freshly foraged sage a little garlic maybe some wild garlic some probably usual wraps I don't know yeah potatoes potatoes carrots rutabaga sweet It's called in some parts of the world rutabaga Sweet adds a powerful flavor aroma on its own, but chicken wild rice soup That's always for me there Mike.
I gotta say I would have to be careful a lot of these offerings I'm guessing are gluten heavy and my my doctors steered me away from that years ago, but I'd be I'd be willing to give a shot. I mean guessing the shank snack would have been right up my alley and well popped out Yeah, I have kind of a rough time with that, but uh boy sounds good I give me a couple scoops of that maple syrup ice cream. Oh, yes happy as a hog and slop good stuff So we'd like to thank yeah, ransberg mike for our first field report this from the krex meadow Meeting and gathering hall 2024 and there was the wild game feed. Oh boy sounds like fun Sounds like a good time.
He didn't have to go too far. I feel I know he was also doing some work with I believe a Ducks unlimited group in one of the Dakotas and possibly a pheasants forever group as well So he he goes far afield to support the hunting causes and is is a happy hunter in his own right and He's a real cabin country guy. He's a cabin country kind of guy so I'm hoping we'll get more I'd love to hear more from from mike on his foraging exploits because he had he was they got to tip me off under the wonders of uh He said plantain, you know the gardener's curse law and keeper's curse, but it's edible It's safe. We've gotten young enough.
It's it's very very very much a potter for the table Excellent a fine table a fine table herb to accompany those fine table birds So there you have it excellent recap of the 2024 krex game feed and thanks again to mike And uh if you've got more stories to share that you'd like us to read or you'd like to record yourself on that Voice recorder feature of your phone you can email it to us of course cabin country pod at gmail.com We'd be glad to uh, yeah, make it radio ready podcast ready and maybe look forward to hearing from you Thanks again to mike from grandsburg a great story Podcast network encourages you to join us at the pumps every Thursday at night for the weekly episode of look at that long The weekly review of the best people on to the upper midwest At CTR's accent howzer will chat with this week's winner and how they manage to manicure their law Everything will be reviewed from the cutling to the long patterns chosen from the styles used in plantings to the trimming of shrubs and trees And don't forget to be areas are always welcome In the time it takes you to check your oil to learn great long maintenance tips and how to winners cut their lawns to become this week's winner on Look at that long and remember CTR stands for zero turn rates The cabin country podcast has been known to lull some of our listeners to sleep and as podcast listeners ourselves We've discovered a pretty large variety of relaxing or sleep-inducing podcasts out there which feature things like white noise or asmr If you don't know what that is it's autonomous sensory meridian response Which is like listening to someone receive a shave and a barbershop or the pleasantly monotonous sound of an announcer calling the balls and strikes of a baseball game So we thought we'd try our hand at this popular podcast style and finish this cabin country episode with a relaxing segment to help you fade off the sleep So settle into your favorite chair and if you happen to be driving, please use extra caution as you listen to this segment We call straight pool welcome to tonight's high-stakes challenge of straight pool for bragging rights as well as $5,000 in cold-heart cash This is a bit of a repeat between chalky ace cockren and tommy dill got him This event has been held at the riverside tavern on an off sale and there's a gallery here billiard supporters I'm going to guess about 75 pool fans are here and they're ready to watch this rematch Thanks again to kccn network for covering this match and find the game on cable t37 and on kccn's radio channels Proud of his be quieting a bit as we get ready for the evening start Tommy dill got it will break tonight's game. There's a single match that will determine a cash prize and some trash talking rights as well Delgado carefully lines up the cue ball breaks the rack sending balls scatter me across the table It looks like tommy sank one solid and one stripe ball. It is his choice not wise to whether he goes solids or stripes Tommy appears to be choosing solids. He's taking a moment lining up his shot This is a straight-on nudge that will sink the four ball into the corner pocket nice and easy does it and he's got his got his first Called shot.
We're gonna move on to delgado second shot. He's signing up the table here. He's setting up for the two ball or is he? That delgado appears to be opting for a safety.
He's gonna nudge the cue ball behind the eight ball to try to block chalky's easy shot The ace is shaking his head and looking at delgado. He'll now attempt to kick shots hitting the rail first to contact the 12 ball Uh-oh, he went left at that rail pop No dice. Tommy now has a relatively clear shot at the two ball in the corner pocket And here comes the run sure enough delgado sinks the two ball in the corner with just a kiss to the cue ball He's left with a workable angle for that six ball next He's carefully lining up his touch on the cue ball. So he might sink that six using draw to stay in line for the three ball next Let's see if he pulls that off Nice touch Tommy's continuing a solid run here.
He's appearing to be sinking balls and sequence clearing the table methodically This might look easy folks, but each shot here requires precise control of cue ball position and angle Ace Cochran is in the unenviable position of watching his opponents game moving flawlessly Delgado is facing the eight ball after sinking the seven. This is moved quickly. He's using a combination shot to pocket the eight into the side pocket Let's see what he can do here Now he's lining up his final shot. It's a straightforward shot on the eight ball into the corner pocket that should seal his victory here tonight Delgado's drawing back the cue methodically And he rips the table.
Oh my oh my god rips the two my gosh Tommy Delgado has ripped the fabric on the side with an errant stroke of the cue There was a sound because Delgado got ready to shoot. What was that? What was it? Anyone was that a drop lowball gluts someone dropped their old-fashioned was that intentional?
The tables rep well that all this is it's well what that means folks for this particular outing is that a rematch will need to be set up I don't think it can happen here at the Riverside Tavern on an off sale with the table rip like that I mean of course there are other tables but this particular table is Professional grade well, Ace Cochran suggesting here somewhat loudly he should be the winner as a result of Delgado's gaffier tonight. Sorry chalky It's not how this works You should know that Delgado will obviously be paying for the refelting at the table here and tonight's game goes down as it's kind of non-event I hate to say Ace can use that and in his banter about how the match went tonight You know cockro'd rip the table so that the ace could well whatever that's neither here There are folks cockro'd still pressing the argument that Delgado loses on a dq given the destruction of the table Well, there you have it. Uh, we'll come at you again tomorrow night. Hopefully we'll get to a cable setup And people can we do that?
All right. Well here with a rather unorthodox dq We never see these Tommy Delgado ripping the felt of the pool table here at the Riverside Tavern on an off sale somebody somewhere in the gallery Rocked a global right back. I'm gonna guess it was an old fashioned maybe a side car Anyway, thanks for joining us and we'll come back to you Hopefully tomorrow night with more billiard action here from heaven hunkry's great northwest And our folks it's time to say good night. We sincerely appreciate your patronage and hope we've succeeded in bringing you an enjoyable evening Let her take please drive home carefully and come back again soon.
Good night
