Ep. 61 Mermaids and Anneliese Michel

from Oy with the Terror Podcast · host Oy with the Terror Podcast

In this week's episode Sandra talks about the legend of Mermaids. Mermaids or merfolk (mermen and mermaids) are defined as having the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. It turns out Mermaids can be dated back to the sixth century and it is rumored that Christopher Columbus even saw mermaids on his voyage in the Caribbean. Today they can be found all over the world and are known in many cultures to be considered a bad omen. Thanks to popular culture most people know of mermaids because of movies like Disney's The Little Mermaid, and Splash. Then, Danielle discusses the twisted and dark story of Anneliese Michel, a young woman who was convinced that demons possessed her in 1970s Bavaria. What started as an epilepsy diagnosis progressed to inconceivable horrors at the hands of people who should have been protecting her. Parts of her story inspired the 2005 film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.    Sandra's Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid https://alchetron.com/Merman Danielle's Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/anneliese-michel-exorcism https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1978/04/21/cries-of-a-woman-possessed/94bf2fd3-8e64-482d-869d-1f929851ca8f
