Ep 64 Snake on the Water: The Snake Pit, Mental Illness & the Film That Changed Psychiatric Hospitals

In this episode, we explore The Snake Pit (1948), the landmark psychiatric drama starring Olivia de Havilland. We follow Virginia Cunningham’s descent into confusion, institutionalization, and eventual recovery inside a crowded state mental hospital. Along the way, we examine the treatments portrayed — shock therapy, hydrotherapy, psychoanalysis, and even straightjackets — and unpack the deeper themes of trauma, repression, attachment, and the cultural diagnosis of women in mid-century America. We’ll also discuss how the film helped spark real-world reform in psychiatric hospitals and why its portrayal of mental illness still resonates today.
