Hello and welcome to WNC original music episode 66 the spooning episode this week We have part two of a Lee Edwards episodes Alan is a very prolific and experienced songwriter and performer and I just want to say here that I highly recommend everyone go back Go back on YouTube and iTunes and just anywhere on the internet and look up his band the louder milks that he was in with his brother Just some really good solid Americana stuff if you like Wilco and uncle Tupelo old 97s anything like that Just go back and look up the louder milks and also Lou Ford You'll hear Ailey talking about this a little bit in the interview some but I just didn't want that to get lost in the mix there You can find Ailey at Ailey Edwards calm all one word and in the calm or you can search for him on Facebook or Instagram And also of course we'll have him in the show notes and the links on Facebook and Instagram Oh, and don't forget that Ailey and his wife Hannah run yonder cafe, which is a fantastically successful cafe in Franklin, North Carolina So if you are anywhere near there make sure to stop by it gets kind of crowded pretty quick So get there as soon as you can you can actually see a write up about the cafe in last month's our state magazine So back to music here is Ailey Edwards The hand that feeds you I bet my hand just don't trust me watch it sifting through like sin to know watch it sifting through like sin Your promises I'd probably say that song had to just come out of my horrible marriage And divorce and be honest to what's it about kind of summarize it for? I mean the lyrics are to having to hold mistake do you know what runs cold here? I am bought and sold and do that one I can't remember the total other than just a miserable relationship along after your miserable relationship is right in the middle of it It was a lot like I said before like I write things there were so much time Like I have a song I just started trying to finish that I probably started writing 20 years ago And just kind of came back to me like some parts, you know So I probably started it in the middle and finished it at the end There's a couple that I played tonight that I wrote with a guy named Mark Lance that was in To move forward with his or bass player in Luford he was kind of like I have a song almost nothing missing the line or phrase or something Oh Sam a familiar was definitely my younger days I definitely had some battles with depression and and I wrote most of that that was on Luford's first record we put that out in 1997 and I had written most of that leading up to moving to Charlotte and then put a band together on my brother and So it was written from like 92 to 97 probably and that definitely came from just my dealing with that, you know It's kind of a just neatly seep aside me without a mountain guy me I said I'm on my way if my hands are stuck there shaking. I mean never make it.
I mean never see They work for you, but I can't fake it. I can almost taste it my destiny. Same old roads have it familiar Miles and miles of colorful billboards some things that I don't need I'm I mean the the billboard You know some of it now like playing those songs now I really have still feel the same which is kind of cool to have written something 20 years ago And like I can play it now and like I still believe that and stuff. Yeah, it's still very real and very I would say top all this yeah It's all that time, but it's also universal time maybe No I That was I wrote that probably about 2007 or so that kind of came from Story that I told my daughter about when I was in college I took an astronomy class and we used to go like this cool We actually just went out there It was at Berry College And they had an observatory the roof cuts like slides off of it And you could they had big telescopes and stuff and in the class we went out there and looked at it Andromeda Which is the closest galaxy to earth and I remember I think it's 200 million light years away I think I'm saying that right and I remember the professor telling us that and then telling us you know the light you're seeing from it left That galaxy 200 million years ago and it just blew my mind like some of it Stars might even not be there right.
Yeah, even like that galaxy might be there and That just kind of and I was telling my daughter about that and and I it was late at night And I think I was playing guitar drinking a rum drink or something kind of great about that From inspired by that anyway, we'll have some more from a Lee Edwards in just a few moments One reminds you to follow him at a Lee Edwards calm or go look for his music there download it stream it listen to it Also, he plays he's he's very busy playing in West North Carolina South Carolina all over the place So make sure to go and check out his Facebook page where you can see all of his upcoming events and also go and follow WNC original music on Facebook and Instagram and YouTube anywhere you can think of but above all that go to where we get your podcast and subscribe to WNC original music So you get your weekly automatic download or notification of the podcast if you're hearing this for the first time Just we should be available on any of the platforms if you're not a regular podcast listener You can always go to the Facebook page and we'll send a notification out each week when the episode comes out Hey, what's up? This is Austin with John Wharton the Benz and you're listening to WNC original music Seems I'm working hard as hell just a boss piece of mondo Lately all I'm doing is killing time Worthless days and restless nights now. I've grown too tired to fight It's time I leave this weary world behind Take my things and move up to mountains Better still I'll leave them all behind Get busy living while the world just goes on dies parking lights Shopping malls unpaid bills and telephone calls Trading off for better stay of mine clear blue skies and open roads and away teams are I decode just a few of the things I hope Yeah, I'll take my things and move up to mountains better still I'll leave them all behind Get busy living while the world just goes on dying some people get by That's it. I wrote that I moved from when I moved to charlotte I had before I moved to charlotte I was living in Virginia in Lynchburg, Virginia And I played two nights a week at this place called TC trotters And it's the only time in my life.
I've ever just played music for like it I made enough money to live off of you know, that's all I did for a while and um I left there I'll get sidetracked I moved to charlotte from there and I just up until we moved back here forever I just I love the mountains and I always wanted to live in the mountains Yeah, I thought I would go back to Virginia But we kind of stumbled on Franklin and You know driving from charlotte to carters. I don't wear a grew up. We come back this way Um, actually discovered silver and then kind of explored around here a little more But that's where that song came from just At love and living in the mountains and really wanting to give them mountains again. I just like it's a different lifestyle here I'm sure we've revealed it's kind of but it's coming from charlotte to here like it really we can drive Out here and go if you go right instead of going out to 441 And unfortunately the only groceries here are walmart or ingles So sometimes we have to go to walmart But if you to go to walmart from here at about 12 miles and you can go from here to walmart sometimes without seeing another car It's amazing Overshots the bourbon and thoughts She told me everything would work out right always saying along I guess I've known it all my life over shots of bourbon and thoughts Should have told you them you were my only friend how to say goodbye Love my songs She always saying along how to say goodbye Goodbye was I a song I lived in Virginia that plant that tc charlotte was that I mentioned there was a bartender named heather and I can't remember others last name But she kind of became a good friend of mine and from playing in there There were nights I'd play and there would hardly be anybody in there and then by the end of the night But she was always at the bar singing you know and kind of it was always kind of I don't know I played many shows to where you know where it's the sound guy in the bartender And it was kind of that thing but it was somebody that you know was a friend and was always kind of Made it like it's okay.
At least I'm at least heather and it's not too weird. Yeah, and uh She after I moved to charlotte she had some kind of I don't know if she was a bee sting or something But she died after I moved to charlotte and um there she was from Pennsylvania and they were having a funeral So my friends were going up there and I couldn't go and um I wrote that song It's kind of a like I can't go to the funeral, but I can you know at least I can write about it or something That's where that came from. How long did you know her? Not that long actually maybe a couple years What I had I went to school up there and I moved away and when I moved back she was friends with some of the friends I'd gone to school with yeah Who was wrong but the word or could I say to you?
Somehow I'll ask a few questions of you Answers are long over do I so Sliciously do wait for an answer there's no heaven but no hell below Like we do Sign that these things were done In choices and few Did you create us did we create you? Words want to it was kind of after I wrote it or started writing it after september 11th And I'm kind of finished it years later, but it was kind of just my take on all these you know Muslims and Christians and you know everybody fighting each other over their god of love and Just kind of Came from Was a song like that um That you didn't write that kind of mean something to you Not just that you like but yeah, there's a lot of this um trying to think like Recently Yeah, there's so many so I can't like going through like yeah even different artists um I mean recently like I was talking about that blaze Foley stuff my brother kind of introduced me to blaze Foley Several years ago now and we covered one of the songs on our last record then this thing came out He's even watching that. I don't know until I never never seen another felt more. I guess kindred spirit you know from a songwriter that So he's there's a song called clay pigeons that John pryne I learned off with a john pryne record actually, but but it's a lace Foley song.
Oh, okay I just kind of covered it a few times and just it's just a really really great song There's another one. I just thought it called thrasher. It's a nail young song. I've always really Really love who's uh Who's a musician that you like that is like very different than the rest or different than what you do?
I He's kind of I mean Not what I do now, but what I do with my brother. I'm gonna take a lot from Richard Thompson this is the way up like a tar leads stuff, but He's definitely one of my like super heroes. I mean these nobody like Madonna or uh, no No I tend to like dead crazy artists. Yeah.
Yeah I think I love Roger Miller. I don't know that might not come through in my music either, but still by No, he's storytelling Yeah, I think he's the greatest songwriter of all time. I really like I mean as far as Certain aspects of songwriting. I guess he's he's more of a like hook.
I mean Do you say people would you know hang out around Roger Miller to try to get song ideas? You know, just hear him talk, you know Which that's amazing. Yeah, we saw a thing at the youtube video. I wish I remember the name of song because everybody in the world said he's like He sings plays fiddle.
What else did you do? And just like everything he touches in the whole span of this Maybe five to ten minutes long. It's like holy shit like mind blowing. You own the name song?
No And I never found out the name of that song. So I want to thank a Lee Edwards for being on the show Just had a really good time with him. I just I love his voice I like to say that it sounds like a really good rocking chair in the best way as I mentioned go and find a Lee on facebook That's probably the best place to find where he's going to be playing next he also has that information on his website a Lee Edwards calm From what I've seen it usually looks like he's playing at least a couple of shows a week He stays very busy and as I mentioned if you're in franklin or close to franklin stop at yonder restaurant Um, he is doing a really great job there with uh with his wife hannah And if you get our state magazine, you can read all about their place And I think that's the most recent issue or maybe the one before that And while you're reading that make sure to go and subscribe to the podcast you can read and subscribe to podcast at the same time Can't you most people can anyway?
