Ep. 7 There is Always a Bright Side

from Tea Talk with Coach Carolyn Hosted by Carolyn Ramona Hantz

How do you raise a difficult issue without becoming the difficult person? In 1998, a group of six of us grew concerned about the lack of representation by gender and ethnicity at the program director level. We could have walked into leadership with a list of complaints. Instead, we framed the conversation around the future, asking what leadership should look like in the organization we were building. I became the group's spokesperson, and we raised it with the head of Audit and ultimately the agency head. It was risky, and over the next few years, representation grew at the program director level and eventually at the SES level. In this episode I talk about: Why there is always a bright side, even in a genuinely difficult situation The difference between bringing people a complaint and bringing them a possibility How reframing "here's what's wrong" as "here's what could be" creates more movement What it takes to influence people who hold more authority than you Why helping people imagine a different future is sometimes the most powerful way to lead change Tea Talk reflection:What difficult conversation are you having right now that you could reframe as a conversation about possibility?
