Ep 73: Don't Save Your Appetite

from Weight Loss for Fertility · host Stephanie Fein, MD

The idea of “saving your appetite” is diet-mentality thinking that backfires every time. Our bodies don’t work like a math equation–we can’t deprive it in the morning to fill it past capacity in the evening. The needs and capacity are finite. Our brain, on the other hand, may want more at one special meal than another.  But the brain can’t make the stomach bigger or smaller by wishing it so. We feel best, most comfortable, and our weight stabilizes when we eat when our body’s hungry, and stop when it’s had enough–when we are satisfied, not full. Thinking that we can control the body’s needs with our will is diet-mentality thinking and leads to the familiar roller coaster of weight loss and weight gain. Trying to restrict and deprive ourselves only drives us to overeat because we get over-hungry. And over-hunger always leads to overeating. By aligning our thinking with our body’s needs, we easily lose weight and keep it off.  It’s possible to lose weight, enjoy food, and feel energized at the same time.
