Ep.804 - Fixed vs. Nimble Scheduling Methods
from Elevate Construction Hosted by Jason Schroeder
Jason is back to regular episodes after finishing the Foreman book, with an update on a recent family cruise and a lesson from a project where the trade partners had grown frustrated with Takt. His insight is that they were holding a fixed mindset about the plan, as if a Takt plan meant every date would happen exactly as drawn. He explains that Takt is a nimble system: you plan, do, check, and adjust daily, protecting trade flow and building a recovery path when roadblocks or constraints show up. Using the picture of Napoleon's smaller, more nimble forces against the Austrian army's rigid plan, he argues that visual, real-time information is what lets a team adapt together. What you'll learn in this episode: Why a Takt plan shows the current path to flow, not a promise that every date will happen as drawn How the plan, do, check, and adjust loop applies to schedules, and why judging a schedule only by the plan misses the point Options when a delay hits: project the delay, detach it onto a separate Takt time, swarm the problem, add swing capacity, or pull out a car or zone What Jason means by "trade burden," where one trade is stacked on top of itself, and why it compounds productivity loss Why visual zone maps, roadblock maps, and a single source of truth help trade partners see and adjust together When a delay hits your project, does your schedule help you adjust, or does it get in the way?
