Gun violence was the cause of death for the majority of the victims. Diaz served as interim police chief for two years before becoming full time chief earlier this year.  Crime, he says, did decrease in the fourth quarter of 2022  with reductions in aggravated assault and larceny-theft.  The SPD Chief talks about changes he is making in the department’s leadership, as well as efforts to hire more officers, the training of recruits to deal with diverse communities and addressing officers mental health.
