EP. 85 - How Bayside Gamed the "Human Algorithm" with TAWTTBA

from The Record Process · host The Record Process

This week we sit down with songwriter, guitarist, and frontman Anthony Raneri of the Long Island-based rock band Bayside.  We invited Anthony to walk us through the unique writing and release process of the band's most recent album titled There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive. You’re heard him explain how Bayside’s sound has progressed throughout the band's career spanning almost 2 and a half decades, and how this album challenged them to expand their understanding of what Bayside Is? Bayside has become known for their almost ‘cult-like’ fanbase, and we dive into how a band like Bayside works to balance outside expectations with their own internal drive to explore new avenues - not just in the music itself - but in the way they approach presenting it to the world as well.  We touch upon how the band felt somewhat discouraged with their previous approaches to recording and releasing records, and how it led them on a quest to game what Anthony calls the “human algorithm” by releasing every song on the album separately. You’ll hear us discuss what it’s like for Bayside to truly live inside of a record, how Anthony tries to stay in that creative headspace throughout the process, and ultimately why he also believes in the self discipline required to take breaks in order to allow life back into the creative process.9:45 - How Baysides sound has developed over the years23:25 - Gaming the "human algorithm" 45:15 - Self discipline and putting "life" back into the creative process51:05 - Mastery of songwriting is being able to get out of your headCLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season!
