Ep 90: Divorcing a Narcissist: Managing Extended Family Relationships After Abuse

What role should extended family play in your life and your children’s lives after divorcing a narcissist?Your divorce will have a ripple effect on those in yours and your children’s lives and your extended family will feel this.  Your ex’s extended family will also be impacted.  The role they get to have in your life and your children’s lives will vary depending on the situation and your relationship with each of them.  In this episode I share some things to think about to help you make decisions on what role you would like them to play.First and foremost, it is important to assess the safety of each of these relationships; physical safety and emotional safety.  Who do they believe?  Will they put your child’s safety ahead of everything else? What type of support are they willing to give?Then you will need to think about what the communication needs to look like for everyone involved to be safe. This includes setting boundaries and expectations with your side of the family and possibly sharing these with your ex’s extended family as well if you have the opportunity.Think about how to manage special occasions and vacations.  What is in your parenting plan and how can your extended family be involved?These situations can be extremely challenging and being proactive in making these decisions for yourself can prevent a whole lot of stress later on.Please leave us a review or rating and follow/subscribe to the show.
