Ep 94: Krissy Vanderwarker Nominates Fiona Apple’s “Tidal”

from This One Goes to 11 · host Tyler Esselman and Michael Osinski

When I tell people about this podcast, there are some names that just keep coming up when people say “Oh cool, has anyone talked about XYZ??” And the artist we’re talking about this week is one of our MOST requested. Yep, that’s right we’re finally talking about the one and only Fiona Apple and her stunning debut album “Tidal”!And who, you might ask, is taking up the task of arguing this album’s perfection? Why it’s our dear friend Krissy Vanderwarker! Krissy has known Michael for ages, from their early Chicago days, and was one of the artists who blew my mind during those first, heady days as an undergrad at The Theatre School at DePaul University. We get into it in the ep, but suffice it to say that the fact that I get to be friends with two of my favorite theatre artists on planet Earth and talk music, art, and life in this way with them is a real privilege. 18 year old Tyler is very happy. In any case, Krissy builds a razor sharp case for the perfection of “Tidal”. She builds it on a foundation of what Fiona does that other artists may not be able or willing to do: to let it all hang out, to live by her own code, and to bare her soul in a way that keeps us coming back for more. Some artists just don’t miss, because they give themselves the room to only work based on their own expectations. Apple is one of these. And given the fact that she’s only gone from strength to strength, it feels like there’s even more beautiful, uncharted territory contained within her. Hopefully we get another glimpse one of these days.So we’re pretty stoked about this one. But will Krissy have what it takes to earn a spot for “Tidal” in the TOGT11 pantheon? Only one way to find out!And did we hear you need some packaging design work done? Well look no further than Krissy’s work with Seedhouse: www.seed-house.com or @seedhouse_design on IG.And keep an eye on Krissy’s socials or her website (krissyvanderwarker.com) to learn more about her forthcoming film with Paul Oakley Stovall called “Chicago”.This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.Theme music composed by Damien Figueras.Got a question, comment, or suggestion?
