Ep. 97: The Stuart Canin Special- How A Violinist Created The Jack Benny/Fred Allen Feud

from Yesteryear Ballyhoo Revue

On a very special episode of the Ballyhoo, Zach welcomes back Darrel Lantz a.k.a. Buck Benny (Buck Benny OTR Podcast) for a deep dive into a comedy feud born out of a 10 yr. old violinist and the laughter that would ensue for over two decades with a look into the life of Stuart Canin and the birth of the Jack Benny/Fred Allen radio feud. FIRST: You will be treated by the guys with an interview with Stuart Canin, the young violinist himself, as he reflects on the broadcast from 1936 and the life he would lead following that fateful December broadcast. You will be treated to many grand stories of Stuarts time working with Jack during his benefit concerts, hear his thoughts on both Allen & Benny as performers and people, and be treated to an exhilarating story surrounding Stuart's service during WWII and a very special concert he participated in. At 96, Stuart is still as sharp as ever. In fact he gets more than 5 steps ahead of our awestruck hosts. THEN: Zach and Buck will analyze the feud and present three key broadcasts during the birth of the feud that would go down in radio and comedy history. The Broadcasts: 'Town Hall Tonight' Starring Fred Allen December 30th. 1936 Featuring the performance of 'The Bee' by Stuart Canin that kicked off the feud. 'The Jello Program' starring Jack Benny March 7th, 1937 Broadcast live from New York City. Featuring Stuart Canin, who gets grilled by Jack as he tries to ascertain Stuarts real age. and 'The Jello Program' Starring Jack Benny March 14th, 1937 Live from the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Pierre in New York City, Jack and Fred finally come face to face and engage in a battle that would put Batman V. Superman to even further embarrassment. --------- --------- Be sure to check out Darrel's work by subscribing to and enjoying Buck Benny OTR Website: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/jack-benny Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jack-benny-show-otr-podcast/id291367201 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/BuckBennyOTR/featured?app=desktop And look out on Bucks YouTube Page for the Video Version of this episode! and be sure to support him on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4279967
