EP 99: Listen, Sis: What’s Broken Can Be Beautiful

We’re all operating out of places of brokenness.  Brokenness, in God’s eyes, is being so crushed by the sin and darkness of the world that we recognize there is no place to turn but to God. I think it’s important for us to recognize this because it affects the way we listen and receive messages from others.  If we’re all broken by sin, then I can either turn in desperation to God or turn in search of worldly fixes. Jeremiah 2:13 compares this search to broken cisterns that hold no water. A cistern was vital for life in the desert. There were long periods of no rain so a cistern held water to keep you alive during a drought. These spiritual cisterns were leaking because the people had forsaken God. The core evil in all our sins is believing some broken cistern will give us greater life and joy than God.  It is only when I turn to God for healing from brokenness, that I can begin operating out of a place of wholeness.   Rebecca shares about Kintsugi (golden joinery) which is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold. It treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Instead of disguising my brokenness, I can allow God to heal me and make something beautiful from it.
