Postpartum depression (PPD) affects many new mothers, often due to a drop in the neurosteroid allopregnanolone after childbirth. Decades of NIMH-supported research led to the development of brexanolone, the first drug approved to treat PPD. Brexanolone mimics the effects of allopregnanolone, offering fast and effective relief from PPD symptoms, representing a major breakthrough in mental health treatment.
