He grew up in Kansas with a father who was an FBI agent and a mother who was a nurse. Tim fell in love with aviation after his father took him to EAA in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. However, his family had no aviation experience, so he thrived in sports and attended the University of Kansas. During a career seminar, Tim talked to a Marine recruiter and was inspired by a poster of a black pilot in an F-4 Phantom.
