EP124: When Planes Crash, Politics Soar: The Geopolitics of Aviation Tragedies

In this episode, we explore the complexities of international commercial airplane crash investigations. We examine the legal framework governing these investigations, focusing on the roles of the Chicago Convention and ICAO Annex 13, as well as the significant influence of geopolitical factors. We use several case studies—including the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752—to illustrate how international relations, national security concerns, and economic interests can affect investigation transparency, cooperation, and outcomes. We also discuss the role of the NTSB in international investigations and the challenges of information sharing and cross-cultural collaboration.
