Ep126 - Misha Nonoo | Sustainability & the Future of Fashion

from Talks at Google · host Talks at Google

Misha Nonoo is a New York-based womenswear designer who was the first to pioneer on-demand manufacturing in a move to dramatically reduce environmental impact and improve the way scaling businesses operate. This model sees each garment cut and sewn in response to every individual order, reducing inventory waste by 90%. Every year, 80 billion pieces of new clothing are purchased globally. However, from production to consumption, the global fashion industry is one of the most resource intensive and wasteful business sectors. In fact, according to the United Nations, the fashion industry contributes more to climate change than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Against that backdrop, the fashion industry's heavy reliance on female workers in the global south greatly impacts gender and social equity standards. A 2019 Oxfam report found that 0% of Bangladeshi garment workers and 1% of Vietnamese garment workers earned a living wage. In this episode, Nonoo discusses what sustainability looks like in fashion and the need for reinvention of the fashion and textile industries as the world charges towards its 2030 climate and sustainability goals.
