EP27: Robert Hamilton Owens - 7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days, at Age 65!

from Make Your Mark

"I've always had encouragers in my life. Mainly it was coaches. And when I was a knucklehead, there were people that would keep me on track.  And then belief...belief that you can do what people don't think you can do.."   I speak a lot of the virtues of just asking, regardless of what it is you are seeking. I asked Scott MacGregor if he would include me in his incredible anthology, "Standing O", and he said yes, which led me to meeting today's incredible podcast guest, Robert Hamilton Owens. Rob has been proving to himself and others that there almost no limits to what you can accomplish, regardless of age, as long as you put your mind to it.   "My kid one day says "You're pretty old at 50…" and I said "WHAT?"! I thought "You know what, I think I'll make a comeback, and put these kids at the finish line!"  And so I did an Ironman at 50, and I found out I liked it and thought it was really fun. So I started doing it every year after that!"   This past year, at the age of 65, Rob completed the World Marathon, running 7 marathons on 7 continents on successive days, and hearing his story of just getting through the first day on Antarctica will leave you truly amazed. But my friends, that only scratches the surface! Rob has been competing in the Ironman Triathlon for years, was a USAF Pararescueman, which is harder to join than the Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Green Berets etc. As he says, "We're the ones who get sent in to rescue the other special ops servicemen!"   "Did you get your win today?" Every day you ought to have a win, and program a win. One less cigarette, one less calorie, one less anger issue. Habits develop habits and wins give confidence for more wins. It's those little steps every day to say no to something or say yes to something. I get people every day who message me and say they got a win today. "I am gaining confidence because that which used to be impossible is happening."   It was challenging to squeeze so much accomplishment into one episode, along with tons of advice on how to be mentally and physically prepared for all obstacles, but you'll be able to get so much out of this, give it a listen! Soon you'll be competing in your own World Marathon Challenge, you'll see!
