Atrial fibrillation occurs when the atria beat rapidly and chaotically, flooding the AV node (the electrical gateway between the upper and lower heart chambers) with impulses. These excessive electrical impulses from the chaotic atria drive the ventricles into rapid, irregular contractions, characteristic of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation requires heart rate regulation rather than pacemaker therapy. In rare cases, when medications fail to adequately control atrial fibrillation or aren't well tolerated, doctors may perform AV node ablation to completely disconnect the atria from the ventricles. When AV node ablation is performed for atrial fibrillation, a pacemaker must be implanted simultaneously because this procedure would otherwise leave the heart beating dangerously slowly.
