EP295: Bitter Sweets

from Doctor Warrick Bishop - Heart Health · host Doctor Warrick

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Podcast Summary Introduction: Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist, author, and CEO of the Healthy Heart Network, hosts this episode focused on raising awareness about health risks that could be prevented with proper knowledge. In this "bittersweet" episode, he discusses two concerning scientific findings related to commonly consumed products that may pose hidden health dangers to consumers and their families. Key Takeaways: Dark chocolate products contain potentially harmful levels of lead and cadmium, with Consumer Reports finding that 23 out of 28 dark chocolate bars tested included dangerous heavy metal levels for people consuming more than one ounce daily. Long-term exposure to lead and cadmium can cause nervous system problems, immune system suppression, kidney damage, and pose particular risks to pregnant women and young children due to developmental concerns. Multiple chocolate manufacturers including Hershey, Mondelez, Theo, and Trader Joe's have been sued since Consumer Reports released its heavy metals findings in dark chocolate products. Aspartame, a common artificial sweetener found in diet drinks and foods, may raise anxiety risk at doses below FDA-recommended maximum daily intake levels, according to recent preclinical research. When consumed, aspartame breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol, which can have potent effects on the central nervous system and alter gene expression in the amygdala, the brain region regulating anxiety and fear. Aspartame exposure showed multi-generational effects in research, with anxiety-like behaviors and amygdala gene changes appearing in offspring up to two generations removed from exposed individuals, suggesting potential impacts beyond the direct consumer. The anxiety symptoms induced by aspartame in test subjects responded to diazepam (an anti-anxiety medication), confirming the neurobiological nature of the sweetener's effects. Human populations at risk from aspartame's mental health effects may be significantly larger than currently recognized, potentially including multiple generations beyond direct consumers.
