狼跟在一群羊的後頭，牧羊人緊緊盯著牠，生怕羊兒被牠吃了。走了好長一段路，狼並沒有要吃羊兒的意圖，牧羊人於是放鬆戒心，他想：「有隻狼跟著也不錯，這麼一來其他野獸就不敢靠近羊群了。」 日子一天天過去，牧羊人把狼當做看守羊群的牧羊犬。有天，他有事要進城，於是把羊群託付給狼看管。 傍晚，牧羊人回到牧場，發現羊兒幾乎都被吃掉了，這才後悔不已地說：「我怎麼會糊塗到去相信一匹狼呢？」
