有隻公鹿來到池塘邊，低頭喝水時，從水面看見自己的倒影，不禁陶醉地說：「我頭上的這對角是多麼美麗呀，只可惜身上的四肢腳又細又瘦，真是難看極了。」 這時，潛伏在公鹿背後的獅子，突然撲了過來。公鹿邁開步伐飛快地跳躍著，把獅子遠遠地甩在後頭。 但當牠逃進樹林時，頭上的兩隻角卻被樹枝鉤住了，卡在那兒動彈不得。獅子趕上前來趁機抓住了牠，公鹿這才明白自己先前的想法是錯誤的。
