Patent foramen ovale (PFO) occurs in approximately 25% of the population when a fetal heart opening fails to close properly after birth, potentially allowing blood clots to bypass the lungs' filtering action and cause strokes. PFO poses particular danger for divers (risk of decompression sickness) and anyone with venous blood clots, as these can cross through the opening into the arterial circulation and lodge in the brain or other organs. PFO closure is a minimally invasive, low-risk procedure performed via catheter through a leg vein, using umbrella-like devices to secure and close the opening, with high success rates despite a slightly increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation.
