The statin group demonstrated 2-3 times greater protection against progression to significant left ventricular dysfunction reduction compared to placebo. The protective mechanism is believed to involve statins' anti-inflammatory properties, which may mitigate inflammatory cellular responses triggered by chemotherapy. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy should discuss with their treating physicians whether starting or continuing statin therapy could provide cardiac protection. Those already taking statins who require chemotherapy may benefit from continuing statin therapy, pending specialist advice.
