天神要舉辦鳥中之王選拔大會。寒鴉想著：「若以這身黑漆漆的羽毛參選鐵定落敗，我得想個辦法才行。」 於是牠到處收集各種羽毛。到了選拔大會那天，所有的鳥類全都梳理好自己的羽毛，早早便來到會場。一隻彩色繽紛的鳥走來，吸引了全場的目光。 「多麼美麗的一隻鳥兒啊！牠就是鳥中之王了。」天神宣布。 這時，一根羽毛從鳥王身上飄落下來，鳥兒們蜂擁而上、一陣猛吞。 「 啊！是寒鴉。」寒鴉黏在身上的羽毛全都掉光了，只好羞愧地離開。
