In 2019, we know that nothing could be further from the truth. A young Saudi ex-Muslim woman, Rahaf Al-Qunun, escaped her family while they were on a trip to Kuwait, and fled to Thailand, en route to Australia where she planned to apply for asylum. Thai authorities detained her, ready to ship her back to her family, where she would face almost certain death. When she started tweeting about her situation, it took less than 24 hours for her story to become a media firestorm. The world's ex-Muslim community—more united than ever—brought mass attention to the story in real time, leading to features in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the BBC, and CNN. Even Muslim supporters like Mona Eltahawy and new US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted their support. Today, Rahaf—a Saudi openly ex-Muslim woman—has been declared a refugee by the UNHCR and is safely living in Canada. In the last year, we have seen the ex-Muslim movement breaking through like never before. Prominent celebrities of Muslim heritage like Zayn Malik and Jameela Jamil openly announced that they don't consider themselves Muslim. There were more conferences, more organizations, and more individuals speaking out openly, without anonymity.
