Dr. Raj Banerjee has a great deal of knowledge on this subject matter, and offers his expertise during the podcast when answering Trista Polo’s in-depth questions. The Thyroid Gland in a NutshellThe thyroid gland rest just below the Adam’s apple and is shaped like a butterfly. It is in front of the windpipe. When the thyroid is normal size or not inflamed it can’t be felt. The gland has two lobes on either side of a connecting bridge in the middle.Dr. Banerjee makes a statement referencing the shape of the gland, “Moves like a butterfly, and stings like a bee!” He says this because if the thyroid acts up or isn’t working properly it can cause major pain, sort of like a bee sting.Raj Banerjee brings the information to the table on what it takes to promote a healthy thyroid. All you have to do is listen and learn! The hypothalamus or the master gland tells pituitary gland, which in turn tells the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones known as T3 and T4. The gland will produce thyroid stimulating hormone which is what is tested when tests are performed in most cases. There could be problems with the thyroid, but with such a wide reference range, a person could be unaware of having it because the test will show normal results. Auto-immune markers are present as well for testing.Symptoms of a Sluggish ThyroidA person who feels that they may have a sluggish thyroid may have a vast variety of systems or multiple ones altogether. Graves or better known as hyperthyroidism can be associated with floaters in the eye, brain fog, irritability, the inability to warm up, constipation, and mood fluctuations.Additionally cysts can also form around the thyroid. This happens when toxins reach the thyroid that have leaked in. The body will attempt to flush out the toxin. If the body cannot push the toxin out, then it will start to inflame. Once inflammation has had time to build, the skin will start to form benign cysts that will have to be surgically removed.Tune in to learn how to promote a healthy thyroid, and how eating healthy increases thyroid functionalityRunning on Auto-ImmuneA person’s immune system is there to protect their body. In 2003, the Human Genome Project was launched and it mapped out the entire genomic map of the human gene. It turns out that 35% of the human genes are made up of viruses. There are genes for all of the auto immune diseases, cancers, etc. The main issue is figuring out what is causing the gene to turn off and on through gene expressions and this is known as epigenetics.Something happened to where a gene was triggered. Imagine someone duck-taping the receptor switch one and it can’t be used to switch off. This is what happens when the body becomes toxic enough to switch an expression of a gene on or off. It can cause the immune system to attack the body, targeting muscles, glands, and other organs.Basically the immune system is eating away at the body.
