Show notes - Host: Dan Hugo - Summary: Some of our existing projects were already designed with this notion in mind, as we extend invitations beyond Nevada to participate in our various endeavors, we are taking aim at open source municipal-scale information sharing! Social Meets News Meets Social - There has been a separation of News and Social, so that News appears on Social Networks - Community or crowd-sourced news (eg Patch) works, but barely - Algorithms are driving awareness, and this a problem Making Local News a Social Matter - News as ad-laden entertainment splits reporting from experiences - Must journalists be held aloft in a crystal palace, or is there a happy medium? - If mere mortals participate in reporting on the ground, should they be held to a standard (credibility, researched reporting of any kind, etc)? Experiments! - Modern news is often presented as though it were still printed on paper - Maps, Timelines, Open Data, Fact Extraction, Network Backlinks, and now so much AI… many modern tools, methods, and integrations are left out of the mix (not 100% true, but close) - Open Source makes more possible (and not everything is Wordpress) So We Begin - Current Projects need to reach version 0.9 - Integration Planning Begins - Outreach for larger participation
