Episode 040 - How being a single mum doesn't have to hold you back, with Corrie McLeod

from Single Mother Survival Guide

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia talks with Corrie McLeod. Corrie has such a positive outlook on life and has achieved so much despite being a single mum. She is a perfect example that anything is possible. At age 28 Corrie started out in PR, as an account coordinator at a large multinational PR firm, after working in hospitality for 10 years. Two years later when having her first baby, Corrie found that the firm she was working with was not set up to enable her to return to work part time. She was a single mum on a pension, when she started freelancing from home. She founded Espresso Communications in 2004 and over the past decade has built the business into a thriving, internationally-recognised communications consulting company. Corrie also created two additional business units under the Hello Espresso brand in 2015: InnovationAus.com and One Part Idea, to provide public advocacy and creative services, respectively, to Australian and international businesses. In this episode Corrie shares her own story of becoming a single mum. She also discusses: starting a business as a single mum with a baby, how she stayed positive as a single mum with a baby, her approach to work life balance and how it has filtered through her company, benefits and challenges she found being a single mum, how being a single mum enabled her to travel the world with her son, how she coped as a full time single parent without family nearby, re-partnering as a single mum and how her family grew from 2 people to five in a couple of years, how she proactively prepared for her new family unit, challenges and benefits of re-partnering, and her advice for new single mums: that we are everything that our child needs, and that we are enough.
