(For the full video podcast of this episode, head over to Junkyard Love on youtube.) A persons energy can be contagious. Joseph has that. When we were kids his wit and skating style were carefree and full of charisma. He was making people laugh when I met him in the 8th grade. We've crossed paths and chit-chatted shortly at shows we both worked at over the last decade, but I've been eager to have a long-form chat with Joe. This conversation didn't disappoint. Throughout the episode - Joseph Crumb and I discuss the importance of the Jester and Funny Philosopher in society, cancel culture, parody, jokes, why we have jokes, the importance of context, crowd, and timing. We vibe about the flowing tides of comedy and the comedians that come with it, we talk about FOMO, anxiety and being constantly "available" through our devices. He shares some background on his life and path that's led him to pursue comedy, writing and music. We talk about things like seeking validation, searching for approval, feeling delusional and a bit crazy, habits, addictions, and mind-altering substances. Joe talks about his band “Stay In Prison” - and how stumbling into music has been a beautiful and fulfilling learning process. He tells me about Open Mic nights, we talk about the art of telling jokes and performance art in general, and how we are always "on". Dj’s and comedians are always working on their bits. We talk about our insecurities and believing in ourselves. We speak on the chameleon personality and learning by mimicking others. Though a lifetime of work - Joseph Crumb has been doing this comedy thing for 4 years now. He sprinkles subtle advice for future creators, comedians and aspiring singers throughout the episode by sharing his story. This episode is riddled with mental wellness tips and soul. Enjoy.
