What secrets are hidden in the cuneiform descriptions of Gilgamesh’s weapons?In this episode of Musings on Mysteries and the Mythical Matrix, we team up with Andrew from WeaponsTalk Podcast to explore the legendary weapons of Gilgamesh through ancient texts, weapon history, Sumerian, Akkadian, and Bronze Age archaeology.We break down the weapons mentioned in the Sumerian and Akkadian traditions, including axes, daggers, swords, hatchets, and possibly even bows or javelins. From Sumerian terms like aga-silig, giri₂, and a₂-aš-gar, to Akkadian words like kakkum, ḫaṣṣinnu, and patru, we examine what these ancient terms may actually tell us about Gilgamesh’s arsenal.Then we compare those weapons to real Bronze Age examples, including the famous Arslantepe swords, early stabbing blades, axes as both tools and weapons, and the difference between cutting, thrusting, and battlefield practicality.But the biggest twist comes from the texts themselves: the weights.Some traditions describe Gilgamesh’s weapons as weighing far beyond anything a normal human could use. In the Akkadian material, the axes and daggers are described in talents. In the Sumerian tradition, the axe Gilgamesh uses against the Bull of Heaven is described as weighing seven talents: roughly 462 pounds.So what do we do with that?Was this classic mythological exaggeration? Did later Babylonian scribes make an impossible detail more believable?
