The Israelites had barely finished saying, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do,” when they decided a golden calf sounded like a fantastic idea. Exodus 32 is one of those chapters that makes us shake our heads and wonder, “What were they THINKING?” But before we get too comfortable judging a bunch of people dancing around a homemade cow, we might want to take a look at what’s sitting on the thrones of our own hearts. Our idols may not be covered in gold, but they can look like money, relationships, politics, success, approval, comfort, entertainment, social media, our phones—or even good things that quietly became more important than God.In Episode #101, GOLD, GLITTER & REALLY BAD DECISIONS, we’re talking about what idolatry actually looks like in the modern world, how easily our hearts can turn something created into something worshiped, and why God refuses to share first place. We’ll dig into Scripture, ask some uncomfortable questions, chase a few Bible rabbit holes, probably get distracted by a squirrel or two, and examine the things competing for our attention, affection, trust, and obedience. Because the golden calf may be ancient history, but idolatry definitely isn’t—and sometimes the hardest idol to recognize is the one we’ve gotten really good at calling something else.
