Episode 101: Why Does the Board Feel More Confident About the Other Candidate?
from Next-Level Ed Leadership Interview Prep · host Jonathan Royce
Try the Complimentary Decision Chain Analysis™:analysis.next-leveledleadershipinterviewprep.comTwo superintendent finalists can have strong experience, give credible interviews, and demonstrate executive leadership. The board may still feel more confident about one of them. Why?In Episode 101 of Executive Interview Intelligence™, we examine Comparative Board Confidence and how small differences in executive visibility can accumulate across an interview.Using real superintendent interview responses about board governance, we compare two candidates who both understood the importance of trust and communication with the board. One candidate explained the principles behind an effective superintendent-board relationship.Another gave the board additional evidence of how that relationship actually operated—how members received information between meetings, what happened when significant issues developed, and how individual communication fit within the responsibility to keep the full board informed.Neither response requires us to conclude that one candidate understands governance and the other doesn't.The difference is what the board has available when it tries to imagine the future working relationship.Executive Interview Intelligence™ | Research Observation #130When two candidates demonstrate credible leadership, the board may develop greater confidence in the candidate whose interview requires fewer assumptions about how that person will operate after being hired. That changes how you should think about a finalist interview. You don't know what the other candidate will say, and trying to outperform an interview you haven't heard can push your preparation toward finding bigger accomplishments or more impressive stories.Instead, examine the uncertainty surrounding your own candidacy. What does this board have to believe about you in order to make the hire? Then ask whether your interview gives it evidence for making that prediction. The board doesn't need certainty. No superintendent interview can provide that.It needs enough evidence to become comfortable with the uncertainty that remains.Every time the board can replace “I assume this candidate would…” with something you've actually demonstrated, the prediction becomes easier to make. Most superintendent candidates prepare for interview questions. School boards are evaluating something else.
