Episode 102: 5 Months Living on an Island with Mary Greensmith
from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247
What does a healthier, simpler life look like when you move to a tiny island and start doing things differently? In this solo episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith shares an update after five months of living on Alderney and reflects on what she loves most about her new island lifestyle. From growing vegetables and reusing resources to walking more, shopping locally and becoming part of a close community, Mary explores how everyday choices are shaping the life she always wanted. Growing Food and Becoming More Self Sufficient Mary shares the progress of her vegetable garden and how she is creating raised beds using locally available resources. Horse manure, seaweed and compost from the island's green waste facility are all becoming part of the garden. She also talks about growing plants from seed and learning what works in Alderney's climate. Reusing Instead of Throwing Away One of Mary's favourite things about island life is the culture of repurposing. Plants, furniture, garden materials and other unwanted items are quickly passed on to someone else who can use them. Even the box hedging removed from Mary's garden found a new home rather than being thrown away. Supporting Local Businesses With no large supermarkets or major shopping centres, independent businesses play an important role on the island. Mary enjoys knowing that money spent locally helps support the people who live and work there. Living remotely also means thinking carefully before buying something because deliveries can take weeks rather than days. Community Connection Despite having fewer than 2,000 residents, Alderney has a huge number of clubs, events and community activities. Mary talks about how friendly people are and how easy it is to meet neighbours, exchange ideas and learn from people who have lived on the island much longer. Walking, Beaches and Outdoor Life Being able to walk almost everywhere is another major change. Mary describes beautiful sandy beaches, historical sites and opportunities to spend more time outside without traffic, crowds or long journeys. Mary's Top Things About Island Living Among Mary's favourite parts of her new lifestyle are: Walking barefoot on the beaches Reusing and repurposing Supporting independent shops Friendly local people Spending more time outdoors Growing her own food Being involved in the community Walking instead of driving Learning from neighbours Having space without feeling isolated Key Takeaways Healthy living can involve much more than food and exercise. Growing food can create a stronger connection with what you eat. Reusing resources can reduce unnecessary waste. Community connection can enrich everyday life. Supporting local businesses helps strengthen small communities. Walking and outdoor activities can become part of daily routines. A simpler lifestyle can encourage more thoughtful choices. There is no single definition of a healthy lifestyle. It is about finding what works for you.
