Episode 11 - Contracting in Coaching

from SHIFT unlimited · host Mel Wombwell & Kylie Roberts

Kylie Roberts and Mel Wombwell, of Shift Unlimited, dive deep into the significance of 'contracting' in establishing effective coaching relationships. Contracting is a verbal agreement between the coach and the client outlining the nature, terms and conditions of the coaching process. They explore areas included in a contract, such as confidentiality, ethical guidelines, client and coach roles, financial and logistical arrangements and, where applicable, the involvement of a sponsor. They emphasise the importance of being explicit about expectations from the start, which greatly contributes to the success of a coaching relationship. They also discuss two models - 'Support vs Challenge Model' and 'RIDE (Reflection, Inquiry, Disruption, Experimentation)' model which they use to highlight their coaching expectations. Contracting, although done primarily at the onset of the coaching process, is something the coach and client can revisit and modify according to the evolving needs of the coaching relationship.00:00 Introduction to Shift Unlimited and the New Normal01:27 The Importance of Contracting in Coaching02:27 Understanding the Concept of Contracting06:38 The Role of Confidentiality in Coaching07:33 Setting Expectations and Using Models in Coaching10:55 The RIDES Model for Progressive Leadership13:35 Additional Aspects of Contracting15:24 Revisiting Contracting Throughout the Coaching Process18:28 Conclusion and Contact InformationPlease find all images mentioned in this episode available HERE
