Episode 11: The One Where She "Riffs" About Shame & (A Little) Guilt

from Unraveled & Unwritten

Shame and guilt are sneaky little suckers. They can worm their way in to just about anything to initiate a desired action or outcome.I feel like it's very prevalent in our world today, ranging from COVID and how people are responding, to what size jeans you end up buying (say hello to "Vanity Sizing" - which they don't seem to have for men, by the way). When people choose to utilize shame and guilt to get someone to do something they want them to do - it's really manipulative and let's be honest, kind of shady. And on the flip side, when we choose to do something out of shame or guilt - what message are we sending ourselves? And why is that acceptable?Come join me as I talk to myself (because really, that's what I'm doing) about how shame and guilt play such slick, and sometimes discreet, roles in our lives, and how we can begin to move them out of the spotlight.Catch me on Instagram @awakentheextraordinary for more insightful (or entertaining) musings. And if shame and guilt are playing a larger part in your life than you'd like, and you'd appreciate a brainstorming partner, email me at [email protected].

BLOOD ON THE TRACKS Season 4: The Brian Wilson Story iHeartPodcasts and Double Elvis In 1966, Brian Wilson planned to follow up the Beach Boys' groundbreaking album Pet Sounds with an even bigger musical statement. He was writing a teenage symphony to God. That album, Smile, was never finished. Instead, Brian slowly unraveled, as the pressure to make something profound weighed heavy on him. He worried that he wasn’t good enough. He worried that he was a failure in the eyes of the record company, his band, his peers, and his own father. He thought his house was bugged. He thought the music he was making conjured some strange voodoo that had a disastrous impact on the real world. He became paranoid. He self-medicated with amphetamines, hash, and LSD. He held meetings in his swimming pool. He imagined people who weren’t there. And eventually, in 1967, he went off the proverbial deep end. Did the real Brian Wilson ever resurface?
