The United Nation’s Durban Review Conference took place last week from April 20th to the 24th in Geneva, Switzerland. It was a follow up to the 2001 World Conference Against Racism in Durban South Africa. The goal of the conference was to evaluate the progress countries have made in implementing the 2001 Durban Declaration and Program of Action which addresses racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and other related intolerance. Many Anti-Racism and Human Rights organizations from around the world, including the U.S., took part in the gathering. In this episode we bring you the voices of civil society who participated in the Review Conference.

The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
