At least since the Hiroshima G7 summit in May 2023, the United States and the European Union have been explicitly calling upon trade policy to advance their economic security. While trade practitioners have been wrestling with the related concept of national security since before the creation of the World Trade Organization, economic security is a relatively new element in the debate.
