Episode 111: Where’s my happy ending?

As human beings, we have an innate fondness for stories. And we love stories with happy endings. In some ways, it might be lovely to have every psalm of lament, every cry for help, end with praise for what God has done to answer the psalmist’s prayer. Some psalms do, in fact, end that way, but Psalm 40 does not. The psalmist is still surrounded by troubles; there are even people who want to take the psalmist’s life. Yet the psalmist still trusts that God is the one who helps and cares for the poor and needy.
